Few things sting like watching your drive land in that bunker you’ve always been able to carry.
After years of perfecting your swing, seeing your hard-earned distance slip away feels down right cruel. Here’s the good news: it doesn’t have to! Spend some time training your balance, and you can keep crushing drives, no matter how many candles are on your birthday cake.
Balance? Really? Shouldn’t you be focused on swing speed or power? Trust us—balance is the unsung hero of a powerful drive. It’s the foundation that holds strength and mobility together, letting you transfer weight from your trail leg to your lead leg with precision.
Here are some tips to improve your balance and bring the power back to your game.Â
How Balance Works: The Big Three
Your balance is powered by three systems that work in harmony—each making small adjustments to keep you steady.Â
1. Â Â The Visual System
Your eyes are like the GPS of balance, feeding your brain real-time updates about your position in space. Most of us over-rely on this system without realizing it. To sharpen your balance, try practicing movements with your eyes closed. It’s harder than it sounds but wildly effective.
2. Â Â The Vestibular System
Tucked inside your inner ear, this system keeps you upright and tells your brain if you’re tilting. Over time, neck stiffness and less dynamic movement can weaken it. Add head turns or dynamic head movements to your exercises to give your vestibular system a wake-up call.
3. Â Â The Proprioceptive SystemÂ
Proprioceptors—tiny sensors in your muscles, joints, and tendons—tell your brain where your body parts are and how much force to use. Exercises focusing on stability, like single-leg stands or balancing with added challenges, can dial this system back into form.
When these systems are firing on all cylinders, your body stays in control, letting you swing with power and precision.
Finding Your Sweet Spot
Beyond testing and training the balance system, there are some targeted exercises that make a world of difference, especially for golfers. The key is challenging yourself at just the right level. If a position is too stable, it won’t push you enough to improve. But if it’s too difficult, it can increase your risk of falling or injury.
We’ve got a simple progression you can try at home to find your balance “sweet spot”. Start near something stable, like a chair or countertop, and work through these steps:
1. March with Assistance
Begin standing next to something stable, like a chair, countertop, or golf club, for light support.
- While holding on lightly, alternate lifting your feet in a marching motion for 10 total marches (5 per side).
-
Challenge yourself: If this feels too easy, perform the marches without holding on.
-
Next step: If you can march without losing balance, you're ready to progress to the next move!
2. Single-Leg Challenge
Begin standing next to something stable, like a chair, countertop, or golf club, for light support.
- With one hand resting lightly for balance, lift one foot off the floor and balance on the standing leg.
- Once stable, try removing your hand and balancing for 20 seconds.
- Repeat on the other leg.
- Next step: If you can balance on each leg for 20 seconds without support, you're ready to progress to the next move!
3. Single-Leg Balance with Head Turns
Great work! Your balance is improving—let’s add an extra challenge to keep progressing.
- Stand near something stable, like a chair, countertop, or golf club, for light support if needed.
- Balance on one leg and, once stable, slowly turn your head side to side with control while maintaining your balance for 20 seconds.
- Repeat on the other leg.
-
Tip: Stay focused and keep light support within reach as you work on this advanced move.
Find the step that challenges you but doesn’t leave you wobbly or frustrated—that’s your starting point. Practice consistently to improve over time.
Balance + Strength + Mobility = More Distance
Balance is just one piece of the puzzle. When you combine it with strength and mobility training, you build the foundation for swing speed, control, and distance that doesn’t fade with age.
GolfForever’s app takes the guesswork out of the equation. The Strength & Flexibility Assessment evaluates your balance and builds it into a customized program tailored to your goals. With guided training that covers balance, strength, and mobility, you’ll be crushing it off the tee and staying steady on your feet.
